Vertebroplasty is a new, minimally invasive interventional therapeutic alternative for the treatment of painful spinal compression fractures that result from osteoporosis. This outpatient procedure can also be used to treat fractures from benign and malignant spine tumors as well as fractures caused by accidents.
The radiologist injects surgical "cement" through a needle into the fractured or crushed bone. Within about 15 minutes, the cement hardens and the bone becomes 4-5 times stronger than the rest of the spine's bones. Severe pain is completely or almost completely relieved in a majority of patients, usually within 24 hours. This procedure is safe and highly effective.
