More than a third of women experience fibroids - the most common type of nonmalignant tumors of the uterus. They often cause excessive uterine bleeding or pelvic pain. Traditionally, fibroids have been treated with hormones, surgical removal of the fibroids or hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus).
Embolization of the uterine arteries is a procedure, which has been performed for over 25 years to treat a variety of conditions. This technique was first applied to the treatment of uterine fibroids more than ten years ago in France. Since then, it has been proven a safe and effective measure to shrink fibroids and is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure performed by an interventional radiologist.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization is performed at:
Mercy Medical Center in Oshkosh and
Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wisconsin.
