CAROTID STENOSIS TREATMENT
Narrowing of the carotid artery in the neck is the cause of about 10% of all ischemic strokes. Narrowing most often results from atherosclerosis but can result from other causes. Surgical treatment with endarterectomy was the standard of care for carotid stenosis for decades and remains a safe and effective procedure. Endovascular treatment with stent angioplasty was originally developed as an alternative to surgical endarterectomy for patients who experienced renarrowing after surgery or to treat conditions or patients not amenable to surgery. Stent angioplasty using embolic protection devices has evolved over the past decades into a safe and durable procedure that now stands on equal footing with endarterectomy for most patients. During a consultation our Endovascular Neuroradiologist will review which treatment is appropriate with you.
